Harambee starlets bundled out of the AWCON 2016

The match between Kenya and Mali that ended 3 goals to 1 in favor of Mali, marked the end of the road for Harambee Starlets. Harambee Starlets have been bundled out of the on-going African Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) tournament. This is after they lost their second straight match on Wednesday 23rd November 2016 to Mali.

A loss for either of the teams meant they would be bundled out of the tournament, as Kenya had lost to Ghana by 1-3, while Mali had lost 6-0 to defending champions Nigeria in their opening match on Sunday.

Kenya was making its maiden appearance in the tournament, and the team consisted of youthful players.  Harambee starlets coach David Ouma has stated that even though they did not meet their target in their maiden appearance they aspire to be in the semis. This was the 6th appearance for Mali however they have never gone past the group stages.

In the earlier group B fixture between Nigeria and Ghana ended with a 1-1 draw. Nigeria is on the lead with four points, so is Ghana who has an inferior goal difference. Mali is at the third position while Kenya is at the bottom with no points. Mali needs to win their match against Ghana in the final group B match tomorrow in order to sail to the last four teams.

Kenya is set to play against Nigeria on Friday 25th November 2016, either way they have been bundled out of the tournament and will be on their way back home from Cameroon thereafter. In group A Cameroon has already qualified for the semi finals after winning against South Africa 1-0 on Tuesday. South Africa will also be playing against Egypt looking to add more points as they currently have one point.
