Kenyans dominate the 41st Amsterdam Marathon
Kenyans dominated the 41st edition of the TSC Amsterdam Marathon on Sunday the 16th October 2016. Daniel Wanjiru finished first by clocking 2:05:21 at the IAAF Label Road Race. This is Wanjiru’s third marathon, and 4km to the finish line he broke away from Sammy Kitwara and Geoffrey Kirui who came in 2nd and 7th respectively. Kitwara finished second in a time of 2:05:45, his fastest time since his 2nd place finish at the 2014 Chicago Marathon, coming in third was Marius Kimutai clocking 2:05:47.Laban Korir, Ezekiel Chebii, Felix Kandie and Bernard Kiyego finished 4th, 5th,6th and 8th respectively. Wanjiru made his marathon debut in Frankfurt two years ago finishing 7th in a time of 2:08:18.
Ethiopia’s Meselech Melkamu secured her third marathon victory of the year by clocking 2:23:21. Melkam is 2009 world 10,000 silver medalist. The favorites in the women’s race were Priscah Jeptoo former London and New York, who is still recovering from injuries, Meseret Hailu, Abebech Afework, Dibaba Kuma and Kenyan born Bahrainian Eunice Chumba. Afework finished second in a time of 2:24:27 while Chumba came in third in 2:25:00. Jeptoo finished fourth in a time of 2:21:09 and Hailu came in fifth.
The weather conditions were favorable in that the temperatures rose from 9C at the start to 12C at the finish.
